The Vaughan Metropolitan Centre is growing! The emerging downtown core is home to Vaughan’s first university, first subway station and now, a new state-of-the-art recreation facility and library. Today, the City of Vaughan, Vaughan Public Libraries (VPL) and the YMCA of Greater Toronto hosted the official grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony of the David Braley Vaughan Metropolitan Centre of Community. As local Councillor for the area, I was happy to see this building finally open its doors officially to the public, and I am sure it will soon be a vibrant community hub within the VMC.
The facility includes the City’s newest recreation venue – Vaughan Studios & Event Space, VPL’s latest branch – the VMC Library and VMC Express – and a YMCA Centre of Community. Located in the heart of the VMC, steps away from the VMC subway station, this facility is easily accessible to the entire community and features sophisticated, state-of-the-art amenities including:
- a new 19,000-square-foot recreation venue with a rooftop terrace
- a 3,350 sq ft studio space that connects to the rooftop terrace, 2 smaller studios that can be used as dance studios or for other activities, a 592 sq ft professional music recording studio, and a 1,450 sq ft culinary teaching kitchen all within the City’s studio and event space
- a 9,000-square-foot modern and innovative VMC Library and a 400-square-foot self-serve storefront called VMC Express
- a state-of-the-art YMCA facility, including a fully equipped aquatics area, an innovative childcare centre, summer camps, quality programming for every age
Fostering arts, culture and learning is such an important foundation for supporting our community, and it’s beyond exciting that this new state-of-the-art recreation facility and library will be able to deliver all these components and much more. This has been a long-awaited project for the VMC, and I’m thrilled to say that we can officially welcome citizens to this new space today. I want to thank everyone who had a part in making it a reality: Mayor and Members of Council, the YMCA of Greater Toronto, The David Braley Foundation, Vaughan Public Libraries and our dedicated City of Vaughan staff.
