Virtual April Break Programs!


COVID-19 Update:

In-person April Break camps and aquatic leadership programs, scheduled April 12-16, are cancelled. Refunds will be issued automatically. Virtual April Break and spring programming will continue to be offered. In-person special needs programming starting April 17 is postponed until May, pending provincial public health regulations.

Vaughan Public Libraries’ three resource libraries (Bathurst Clark Resource Library, Civic Centre Resource Library and Pierre Berton Resource Library) are closed. Curbside pickup will resume and be available at all locations except Maple Library. Virtual programs and Virtual Information Desk services continue.

City swimming pools and fitness centres are closed. In-person fitness classes are cancelled. Refunds will be issued automatically to all registered participants and permit holders without penalty during this closure. All memberships will be extended for the duration of the closure. Virtual fitness classes will continue to be available via Zoom and YouTube. Maple Community Centre will continue to operate as a vaccination site by appointment only. Father E. Bulfon Community Centre will serve as a future vaccination site.

You can still have fun on your spring break with the City of Vaughan’s new recreation programs! To help keep everyone active, the City of Vaughan has released a spring Recreation eGuide featuring the biggest line-up ever of virtual programs, livestreamed via Zoom. There’s something fun for everyone! Choose from creative, culinary and performing arts, to fitness and sports, science and technology, and leadership and life skills.

All programs run virtually; pre-registration is required. Internet access and a computer with audio and video capabilities is required. A participant information package, supply list (if applicable) and Zoom link to your program will be emailed in advance. Parent/guardian assistance may be required. April Break

From April 12-16:
Bloom, there it is! April Break is around the corner and we have a fun line-up of boredom busters to keep kids entertained during the school break.

Master film making by creating your own blockbuster to enjoy on the big screen. Experiment with pencil, pastels and paint…or some icky sticky slime! Up your strategy with a game of checkers or chess. Build a robot and design LEGO models. Act, sing and dance. Train to be a ninja or an athlete—and add a dash of Disney-inspired magic to your workout! Spots are limited, so book now!

Programs run daily for 45 minutes to 1.5 hours.

April Break Virtual Dates

Parents: Are your kids feeling a little springy and you’re running out of ideas to keep them busy? We’ve got you covered during the shutdown – we’ll take some of the planning stress off you and help your kids get some much-needed friend time. Choose from two “Cool & Crafty” activities that children ages 4-9 can enjoy from the safety of their home, but in the company of their besties – virtually!  Spots are limited, so book now!

The following playdates, delivered by a recreation instructor via Zoom, are available to book during on Tuesday, April 13 and Thursday, April 15 for one hour between 1-3pm:

Cool & Crafty – Cost: $199 for 10 participants including the host’s child; $15 per additional participant. Feeling makeful? Get your glue ready! Warning: things might get a little messy. Creativity required and fun guaranteed.

Option #1: Cheep Cheep Casa – Each kit includes: one ready to hang, wood bird house (4.5″ x 3.5″), one paint pot set, two fine paint brushes, one sheet of peel and stick jewels.

Option #2: Totes Adorbs – Each kit includes: one small canvas bag, one paint pot set, and two small paint brushes.

Note: Individually wrapped supply kits are included in the cost and will be made available to the host for curbside pick-up at a local community centre. 

Spring Programs

Bake and cook tasty new recipes. Draw, paint, collage and sculpt. Make, dismantle and fix things using STEM (and LEGO!). Practice ballet and hip hop or perform in a musical theatre revue. Stretch out aches and pains; grow your basketball game; do no-equipment sports and bodyweight exercises. Learn about money management, how to write a resume and interview for a job. Plus, a kindergarten readiness series for preschoolers and life skills courses for individuals with special needs.

Virtual spring programs run once a week for up to 10 weeks, for 45 minutes to one hour. Register now!

Aquatic Leadership Programs

Teaching a life-saving skill or saving a life: it doesn’t get more rewarding than that!

Online Learning: all theory will take place virtually in April. A participant information package, supply list (if applicable) and Zoom link to your program will be emailed in advance. Times listed are for the online learning component, which occurs prior to the in pool practical. Vaughan Public Library April Break Programs

Stem Workshops

Come and join us as we explore the history and power of simple machines and create some of the most influential simple machines that shaped the medieval era! We’ll be putting together a catapault and a trebuchet out of some popsicle sticks and a lot of engineering know how!

Registration is $10. A Workshop Kit will be available through Curbside Pickup. You will be contacted via email to pickup your materials kit prior to the workshop. This program will be hosted on Zoom. Priority will be given to confirmed VPL members.

Virtual Puppet Show

Learn some cool French words while enjoying the many adventures of Gérard and Piggie. This program will be hosted on Zoom. Priority will be given to confirmed VPL members.

Relaxation Retreat for Kids

Want to relax and recharge? Let’s chill out together as we learn about mindfulness and create some homemade stress busters, including squishy toys. VPL staff will lead the activities, games and trivia. For grades K-8. Any supplies needed will likely be items that most households will already have on hand.

We’ll be showing you how to make some cool stuff during the program. You are welcome to just watch the demonstration, and then make things after the program is over. If you’d prefer to follow along at home at the same time, please find the following items in advance:

DIY Paper Squishy Supplies:

  • Construction paper or plain paper
  • Pencil and eraser
  • Something round, such as a bowl or plastic lid
  • Pencil crayons, crayons, or markers
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • Stuffing for the squishy, such as pieces of foam, cotton batting, or plastic bags cut into small pieces

Lava Lamp Ingredients:

  • Clear jar or container
  • 1/3 cup warm water
  • 1/3 cup of Sunflower oil
  • 1 Spoonful of Baking Powder
  • A few drops of food colouring

Vanilla Foot Scrub Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup granulated white sugar
  • 2 tbsp – 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 2 drops food colouring (optional, for colour)
  • 2-3 drops of vanilla (optional, for scent)

Participants may prefer comfortable clothing. A yoga mat is optional. Please select one ticket per family. Parents should attend with younger children. This program will be hosted on Zoom.
