Vaughan Welcomes the Year of the Dog!

Vaughan Welcomes the Year of the Dog!

Lunar New Year is a vibrant cultural holiday that commemorates the beginning of a new Asian calendar and is held in late January or early February every year. It is also known as the Spring Festival or the Chinese New Year. This 15-day festivity is observed with a variety of traditions from thoroughly cleaning the house to bring good luck to exchanging red money envelopes to encourage prosperity – it is a time to welcome new beginnings, fortune and well-being. For me, it is a special occasion because I have the opportunity to spend quality time with my family as well as the Vaughan community.

Guests enjoyed a variety of festivities that included a lion dance, an eye-dotting ceremony and a visit from the God of Fortune. Stage entertainment included musical performances, cultural dances, martial arts demonstrations and talent shows. Children enjoyed interactive games, colouring activities, Chinese calligraphy and a customized button as a souvenir!
This year, the event was organized in partnership with the Federation of Chinese Canadians in Vaughan (FCCV) and sponsored by Castlepoint Investments Inc., Splendid China Mall, Liberty Development CorporationThe Remington GroupThe Vogue Development GroupMiller Thomson LLP, Mennie Canada, and Empire Communities. Food was provided courtesy of Paradise Banquet and Convention Centre and Golden Bubbles Restaurant.
It makes me proud to see everyone come out to support, embrace and learn more about the cultures that make up our vibrant city. I wish everyone celebrating the Lunar New Year a healthy, happy and prosperous Year of the Dog!
