The Lunar New Year is a significant holiday in the Asian culture that celebrates good luck, happiness, wealth and longevity. It is a time to reflect on our successes, celebrate new beginnings and get together with loved ones. I look forward to this special occasion each year as it is an opportunity to spend quality time with my family, friends and the community.
The City of Vaughan will be hosting its 8th annual Lunar New Year Celebration in partnership with the Federation of Chinese Canadians in Vaughan (FCCV), complete with fun activities, cultural performances and refreshments. Bring the whole family and join us at Vaughan City Hall on Feb. 4th from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. as we welcome in the Year of the Dog.
The Dog is one of the 12 animal signs in the Chinese zodiac and represents loyalty, kindness and honesty. It is said that people born in the Year of the Dog are independent, responsible and sincere. Lucky numbers for those born in the Year of the Dog are three, four and nine, with lucky colours being red, green and purple.
Families and individuals of all backgrounds are encouraged to join us in the celebration of this Asian tradition. It is an incredible privilege to be able to experience and learn about different cultures right here in Vaughan, and I am proud and thankful to represent a City that embraces and welcomes many diverse cultures and speaks over 105 languages.
I wish everyone celebrating the Lunar New Year all the best and hope to see you all on February 4!
