Greening Vaughan: Recognizing Climate Change and Making a Difference with Simple Steps

Every year, the City of Vaughan hosts a series of Environmental Days in each Ward for all residents participate in. Environmental days provide an excellent opportunity for resident to demonstrate their commitment to protecting the environment in our community. Green Directions Vaughan is the City’s Community Sustainability and Environmental Master Plan. Approved in 2009, this long-term plan is designed to guide the community to a more sustainable future by addressing environmental, cultural, social and economic issues. It influences all aspects of the City’s operational and regulatory activities including the growth management strategy. Environmental Days is an opportunity for all residents to learn more about environmental sustainability and positively contribute to our environment through safe disposing of electronic waste, exchanging damaged city-issued blue boxes and green bins, and FREE mulch!

Here are a few ways to participate:

  • Mulch Giveaway – Bring reusable containers or paper bags and receive FREE mulch
  • Iron Mountain –  FREE secure document shredding service
  • Free Exchange of Damaged City-Issued Blue Boxes and Green Bins or Purchase NEW Blue Boxes, Kitchen Containers, Green Bins and Composters
  • Green Directions Vaughan – Learn more about the City of Vaughan’s sustainability initiatives, and ways you can be involved!
  • Win one FREE LEAF Backyard Tree Planting Gift Card (valued at $150), raffled at each event
  • Free Electronic Recycling; Sponsored by Maple Lions Club – Drop off your unwanted and old electronic equipment that will be refurbished and returned to the community to support needy families or social service organizations, or properly recycled if it is not reusable.   • Canadian Diabetes Association Clothesline Drive – Donate gently used clothing, all cloth-based items, bedding, sleeping bags, belts and ties, yarn blankets, drapes, pillows, footwear. For more information, please visit the CDA Clothesline Website.
  • Visit the Plug’n Drive booth to learn about electric cars and their environmental and economic benefits! Jump in and enjoy a free electric vehicle ‘Ride and Drive’ opportunity!
  • Water/Wastewater & Stormwater departments –  learn more about water leak detection, back-water valve installation, stormwater infrastructure, view the water and sewer pipe camera in action!
  • York Region – Learn more about solid waste management and water for tomorrow initiatives

Environmental Days will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. (rain or shine) at the following locations:

  1. Saturday, April 30, 2016 – Vellore Village Community Centre (1 Villa Royale Avenue)
  2. Saturday, May 14, 2016 – Joint Operations Centre (2800 Rutherford Road)
  3. Saturday, May 28, 2016 – Al Palladini Community Centre (9201 Islington Avenue)
  4. Sunday, June 12, 2016 – Garnet A. Williams Community Centre (501 Clark Avenue West)
  5. Sunday, June 19, 2016 – North Thornhill Community Centre (300 Pleasant Ridge Avenue)

Environmental Sustainability in the City of Vaughan

The Environmental Sustainability team within the Policy Planning and Environmental Sustainability Department are responsible for championing the implementation of Green Directions Vaughan, the City’s Community Sustainability and Environmental Master Plan and its goals, objectives, ethics and principles. Environmental Sustainability works in partnership with internal and external stakeholders to achieve a healthy natural environment, vibrant communities and a strong economy. This is achieved through support for residents and businesses resulting in increased awareness and local action on key environmental issues such as climate change, green infrastructure, and energy efficiency projects. Further, Environmental Sustainability supports research, policy and program development activities that address environmental priorities and implements coordinated activities across the City’s departments.
