Pleasant Ridge Library Opening

PLEASANT RIDGE LIBRARY…. A TRUE COMMUNITY RESOURCE

One of the priorities for a municipality is to provide programs and facilities to serve the residents. On December 20, 2014, we did just that. We opened the doors to the Pleasant Ridge Library, directly attached to the North Thornhill Community Centre. It was overwhelming to see residents of diverse culture, background and age, coming out to attend this opening. Between December 20th to December 31st, we had close to 5,000 customers visiting our new library, borrowing over 10,000 items, and signed up 350 new members. These numbers alone solidified in my mind how important it is to provide such a facility in a residential neighbourhood where it is easily accessible.

On April 26, 2015, we had our Official Grand Opening to showcase newly added resources and interactive programs available for residents to enjoy. One of the new resources that the Vaughan Public Libraries (VPL) integrated was the use of ipads to promote VPL’s digital content. Residents can now easily borrow ipads and laptops from their in-library vending machines to browse digital content! On a larger scale, Vaughan Public Libraries has added more variety to programming by introducing various “MakerKits” that include music, robotics, and green screen movie maker and 3D MakerKit Printer to bring artwork to life!

Pleasant Ridge Library now offers a variety of programs, especially for families with small children which include Born to Read, Family Storytime, Reading Buddies and much more! I hope you take advantage of these programs with the whole family! For more information, please check out the link at http://www.vaughanpl.info/programs/index/selected_events.

With all the latest and most advanced technologies at the tip of our fingers, some may say that libraries are no longer needed. However in speaking to the residents and seeing the data, it is quite the contrary.   Libraries will never be extinct because not only is it a place to borrow books, but a gathering place for families to come together to learn and share.
